Get Out Girls! - The South Vancouver Youth Outreach Program

Sponsor: VIRSA, John Oliver S. S. Community Schools Team

The Get Out Girls! program is aimed specifically for girls by girls. The program is for all girls and will be all inclusive; however Indo-Canadian participants will be specifically targeted due to the large population of this cultural group in South Vancouver and the lack of dedicated services for them.

This project is intended to entice non-participatory girl youth into participating in social recreational activities. The intent is to develop a group of girls 13-17 years of age whom will meet weekly to plan activities and then participate in those activities.

Small group activities will be offered for 4-12 individuals and large group activities for up to 40 individuals from 13-17 years of age. Activities will occur out of school time, in the evenings and on the weekends.

The goal of the Get Out Girls! program is to attract as many girls into the activities as possible. The hope is to create an opportunity for young girls to have a voice and role in developing recreation and health activities in South Vancouver. The goal is to support these desired activated developed by these youth by assisting them in making the activities occur in the community.

Partnering together will hopefully create opportunities which would not otherwise exist for youth and by youth. The program will work to provide opportunities for young women in South Vancouver, particularly those from the Indo-Canadian Community who are not necessarily involved in athletics or recreational activities due to barriers such as their lack of specific ability, and lack of exposure to recreation and athletics.
