Outside the Box - A documentary on the value of non-traditional educational experiences

Sponsor: Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House and Vancouver Technical Secondary School

Outside the Box will produce a documentary on the value of non-traditional educational experiences, such as drama, as a tool for community engagement, social activism, media relations and citizenship skill development produced by students, mentored by film professionals, and sponsored by a Neighbourhood House.

The goals of the project are to empower eastside high school students to voice their opinions and perspectives through visual arts and to broaden eastside high school students understanding of media literacy and citizenship skills through their experience with other students.

The intent of the documentary is to explore the value of high school educational experiences beyond traditional academics through interviews—with students, teachers, politicians, educators, business leaders and community residents—and through documenting students experiences, particularly students interacting with the community and media.

Those interactions include getting involved in issues that concern them, such as violence and neighbourhood safety, by working with local media, businesses, and other schools. This builds “citizenship” skills and helps students become engaged citizens, taking an active role in building healthy communities.

The issue addressed in the documentary is one of the importance and value of the educational opportunities students experience when they interact with their communities.
