Youth to Youth - Teaching World Music Through the Oral Tradition

Sponsor: Britannia World Music/Britannia Secondary and Britannia World Music/Britannia Community Centre

In Youth to Youth - Teaching World Music Through the Oral Tradition, will offer Zimbabwean Marimba and Afro Cuban Percussion Classes in schools and community centres to be taught by six advanced youth instructors.

This outreach program will provide the opportunity for as many as 150 youth to experience music from world traditions. The goal is to engage as many as possible in follow up programs in their schools, community or at Britannia.

The project will help to share cultural literacy! An emphasis on percussion and large motor skills make Afro Cuban and marimba classes particularly appealing to boys. Also, the music is accessible because it is taught through the oral tradition.

Youth from cultures that involve music in their everyday lives immediately relate to the music and enjoy the chance to express themselves through it.
