Youth Arts and Media Gallery: Broadway Youth Resource Centre
Sponsor: Pacific Community Resources and Brenda Carr Studio
The Youth Arts and Media Gallery project has two major components; to transform the current boardroom of the Broadway Youth Resource Centre into a youth-based and youth-driven visual arts gallery; and to create a series of outdoor murals.
The gallery will be accessible and open to all youth in the city to host their artwork
Visual Arts Gallery - Youth will have the opportunity to consult with three community-based and professional artists: Brenda Carr and Maria Daley and Nigel from Leave Out Violence to design, paint and remodel the current boardroom space into youth’s vision of a gallery space.
The Youth Arts and Media Gallery, once created, can then host on-going youth art exhibits, as there is currently no place in the city of Vancouver that provides FREE gallery space specifically for youth to showcase their artistic work, since the closure of the Brenda Carr Studio.
Outdoor Murals - Youth will create a series of 6 plywood murals that will be mounted on the outside of the Broadway Youth Resource Centre.
The hope is that the murals will create a youth-friendly atmosphere and the visibility of the murals will indicate to youth and their families that the location is a safe and positive place for young people.
For many of these youth, artwork serves as a healthy alternative to other high risk activities. This project will provide many benefits, including developing positive peer connections, having a safe venue for youth to express themselves artistically, learning new skills regarding art production or being an art curator, and self-esteem building through meaningful involvement as drivers in establishing this project.
