East Vancouver Free Studio
Sponsor: Purple Thistle Society
Youth Representative: Sean
The East Vancouver Free Studio project will create a free recording studio for practicing and recording music for low-income youth in East Vancouver.
The studio will be open five days a week for five hours a day for the program. The project will support the purchase of instruments, equipment and supplies for the youth. The construction and renovation of the space will be contributed to by the Purple Thistle Centre in addition to local volunteer carpenters, electricians, drywallers, musicians and studio technicians.
Once the space is constructed and the equipment is installed the space will provide:
- Free recording and rehearsal time for low-income youth;
- Time slots on the radio station and workshops on how to use and build the station;
- Workshops on how to record CD’s;
- Songwriting workshops with local performers;
- Music theory classes; and,
- Rhyming and hip-hop workshops.
The space is necessary since currently there are not any free spaces for jamming and recording music in East Vancouver. Most youth cannot afford to pay the expensive rental fees required by most professional recording studios and are therefore unable to record and promote their music.
The goals of the East Vancouver Free Studio are:
- To greatly diversify the Vancouver music scene by giving young, underprivileged artists the opportunity to record their music in a professional environment with the help of skilled mentors;
- To increase the resource base of diverse, at-risk youth to draw on for cultural events;
- To integrate the program into the existing Purple Thistle Community Radio Project to allow for broadcast and conduct interviews with local bands; and,
- To utilize the Purple Thistle website to engage with community.
