GetOut! Grants to Youth Projects
These projects were started by, designed by, and run by Vancouver youth who approached local community organizations to host them. GetOut! is exceptionally proud to have helped out and to announce that many of these projects are still going on in some way.

Fall 2005 / Spring 2006
Create Now!
Host: Up in the Air Theatre Society
Youth Representative: Jennifer
Create Now offers aspiring female performers a series of workshops that provide an opportunity to explore self creation in a welcoming and supportive manner. Workshops focus on creation activities involving writing, directing, acting and physicality, where the young artists work and learn alongside professional artists.
Dirty Gender Secrets
Host: Video In Studios
Youth Representatives: Louis & Samonte
Dirty Gender Secrets was a three day, youth-developed, multimedia art event brought forth to unearth the gender dirt we're afraid to say, not allowed to mention - but are going to do anyway. The first of its kind in Vancouver, Dirty Gender Secrets is a trans/gendering art event that will expose both dominant and alternate myths about gender.
The GetOut! Games
Host: Little Mountain Neighbourhood House
Youth Representatives: Seguna (Tupper GetOut! Youth Action Team)
Recognizing the tough transitional year of Grade 8, the Getout games was designed by the Tupper GetOut! Youth Action Team as a community building sports day fostering inter-grade cooperation, welcoming the new grade 8s, and encouraging them to be active and involved in school and extra-curricular activities. The focus of the games and activities is on inclusion, participation and fun as opposed to competition.
Killarney Youth in Action Mentorship Program
Host: Killarney Community Centre Association
Youth Representatives: Carmen & Michelle
The Killarney Youth in Action Mentorship Program is a peer prevention program reaching out to "at risk" youth aged 10-12 and pairing them with high school mentors. Through a number of facilitated activities, projects and culinary experiences youth are provided with various cultural and artistic means of self-expression in a supportive mentorship environment.
LOVE Vancouver Publishing Project
Host: Leave Out Violence Society
Youth Representatives: Jessica
The Leave Out Violence Vancouver Publishing Project addresses the issue of youth violence along with the common complaint of youth that they do not have a voice. LOVE youth leaders participate in and then conduct a series of workshops covering public speaking, presentation, anger management, role-playing, team building and group facilitation.
Mark My Words
Host: Kinex Youth Initiative
Youth Representatives: Gab
Marks My Words is designed to develop the capacity of young musicians and audio artists facing barriers to the music and performance scene in Vancouver. Young musicians are mentored by older youth from within the Vancouver music scene, culminating with the youth professionally recording a CD and a live CD launch/community party.
Windermere Community Mural (phase two)
Host: Collingwood Neighbourhood House and Windermere Secondary School

The Community Mural is being created at Windermere Secondary School by up to 1,000 youth in the community over a span of approximately 4 years.
Youth of the Unsung Talents Heard
Host: Dunbar Community Centre Association
Youth Representatives: Lin Ling
Targeting shy and unspoken youth, the Youth of Unsung Talents Heard project will involve 25 youth in a series of creative writing, theatre, and visual art workshops encouraging them to develop their artistic skill, articulate their stories, and engage with the community.

Belly Dancing Class
Host: Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House
Youth Representative: Sara
The Belly Dancing Class was offered to youth from grades 6-8 and will focus on teaching basic steps in addition to its cultural background.
The Colouring Book Project
Host: Purple Thistle Society
Youth Representative: Gabrielle
The Colouring Book Project is a youth driven project on racial identity development and socialization for people of colour.
Commercial Drive Video Project
Host: Templeton Foundation
Youth Representative: Jorah
The Commercial Drive Video Project is community based and youth produced, with the intent to connect a diverse range of youth in the community through a series of youth-driven participatory workshops to research neighbourhood issues.
Community Mural (phase one)
Host: Collingwood Neighbourhood House

The Community Mural will be created at Windermere Secondary School by up to 1,000 youth in the community over a span of approximately 4 years.
East Vancouver Free Studio
Host: Purple Thistle Society
Youth Representative: Sean
The East Vancouver Free Studio project will create a free recording studio for practicing and recording music for low-income youth in East Vancouver.
Girls in Motion
Host: Riley Park Community Association
Youth Representative: Donna
The Girls in Motion Project allows High School girls to interact with and mentor grade 7 girls to participate in a variety of classes such as salsa dancing, yoga pilates, self defense, and weight training.
Guitar Lessons for Youth with Disabilities
Host: Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House
Youth Representative: Tommy
The Guitar Lessons for Youth with Disabilities project offered participants the opportunity to learn to play the guitar at the Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House.
Our Journey of Ancestral Teachings
Host: Warriors Against Violence Society
Youth Representatives: Margaret and Sade
The Our Journey of Ancestral Teachings Project offers cultural workshops by Elders to many youth from Vancouver. Selected youth will then travel by van across the provinces to accompany an elder to visit sites and participate in events and ultimately witness a Sundance Ceremony in Manitoba.
Outside the Box Comedy Events
Host: Kitsilano Community Centre

The Outside the Box Comedy Events project offers a series of comedy events that incorporate improve games for all interested youth ages 12 and up.
Strathcona Peer Mentorship Program (phase one)
Host: Downtown Eastside Safety Society
Youth Representative: Stephanie
The Strathcona Peer Mentorship Program provides cultural and artistic opportunities for at-risk youth ages 11-12. They will be supported by positive peer ages 15-18 in order to assist in the development of self-identity, self-esteem and self expression.
Youth Leadership Program - Happy Meal
Host: Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House
Youth Representative: Lysandra
Happy Meal was a series of cooking classes for youth to learn how to cook meals using foods from different cultures. The class will offer the youth an opportunity to meet different people and learn to cooperate in a large group environment.
Youth Photo Exhibit and Contest
Host: Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House
Youth Representative: Martin
The Youth Photo Exhibit and Contest trained youth ages 11-15 to use a camera and give them the opportunity to exhibit their work and win awards.
Youth Squad - Dance Class
Host: Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House
Youth Representative: Jennifer
The Dance Class program was offered twice a week for groups of participants in grades 5-7 at the Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House Out-of-School Care at Laura Secord Elementary School.
