Killarney Youth in Action Mentorship program
Sponsor: Killarney Community Centre
Youth Representatives: Carmen & Michelle
The Killarney Youth in Action Mentorship program is a peer prevention program reaching out to "at risk" youth aged 10-12 and pairing them with high school mentors. Through a number of facilitated activities, projects, and culinary experiences youth will be provided with various cultural and artistic means of self-expression in a supportive mentorship environment. Youth will gain a sense of accomplishment and develop a network of support through their participation in activities such as African drumming, break dancing, clay sculpting and Japanese culinary lessons.
The goals of the program are:
- To develop youth self-identity and belonging trough the creation of strong community connections;
- To offer relevant and accessible opportunities for skill building for “at risk” youth and student mentors to build experience, confidence, and knowledge;
- To engage grade 10-12 students to take ownership in their community by providing them with an opportunity to utilize their leadership skills.
