Youth Photo Exhibit and Contest
Sponsor: Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House
Youth Representative: Martin
The Youth Photo Exhibit and Contest will train youth ages 11-15 to use a camera and give them the opportunity to exhibit their work and win awards.
The project will offer youth the opportunity to learn the techniques for taking photos, processing a developing the images, framing and ultimately exhibiting in a public space. One of the two topics approached will be “What I Would Change About Vancouver”.
The Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood house will help guide the process by providing staff support, project space and by assisting in learning and applying project management skills, such as budgeting and project promotion.
The goals of the Youth Photo Exhibit and Contest are:
- To create an opportunity for community youth who are not involved in any programs to organize and create a project that they will have ownership over. This will help build confidence and develop leadership, teamwork and organizational skills;
- To create opportunities for youth to express creativity, opinions, provide opportunities for a forum for self-expression;
- To engage youth who are relatively inactive or uninvolved. The program will be promoted in different languages to help reduce the language barrier and promoted in classrooms to reach youth who may not be engaged through other advertising; and,
- To encourage community partnerships by the organizers working with companies such as Kingsgate Mall, Starbucks, Mount Pleasant Community Centre, and Cuppa Joe to display photographs.
The program aims to gain community recognition of youth’s opinions through artwork while empowering youth through skills development and leadership opportunities.
