There are 16 Canadian Education Centres around the world in the following cities: Bangkok, Beijing, Buenos Aires, Canberra , Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Jakarta (sub-office in Surabaya), Kuala Lumpur, Mexico City (sub-offices in Guadalajara and Monterrey), New Delhi , Oslo, São Paulo, Seoul , Singapore and Taipei. These Centres provide students with materials and application forms for hundreds of Canadian schools, counselling to identify the institutions and programs that best meet their needs, and pre-departure orientations to help prepare students for their trip to Canada. The Centres also perform outreach to local schools and agents, and gather market intelligence on student trends and competitor country activities.

Click to learn more about Y:57The BIG Game Design Competition 2007!

Submit your name(s) NOW
to be one, or on one,
of the competing design teams...

» click here to see poster

The Belonging Initiative, in collaboration with Aitken Leadership Group, is supporting the development of games that are fun and accessible for everyone, games that take play beyond computers and into the spaces around us, games that require people working together. BIG stands for Belonging In Games. We are hosting a competition to see who can invent the best BIG game.

We are inviting everybody we know. The kids rolling down the sidewalks, moms and daughters, directors of non-profits, disaffected Emily Carr grads, and you. This is grass-roots game design, a competition for non-gaming-professionals, whose game experience may be limited to bouts of Tag or Snakes-and-Ladders. We want you to enter this competition. You can win a little money and considerable acclaim, and help us fight isolation at the same time.

BIG games are fun, accessible games that include play in the 'real world' and interaction with other people. BIG games are definitely not solo, computer-only adventures. They are playable across urban landscapes, in real time, with real people, who may or may not have super-abilities.

Your challenge is to design such a game and pitch it to our panel of judges in October, 2007. You will win or lose on the strength of your pitch. The game need not be playtested to win - though a playtest might make your pitch meatier - it just needs to win over the panel.

The competition starts now. You need to submit your name to be on one of the teams or your team's name and the names of its members (if you already have one) ASAP. The competition will be restricted to 20 teams. The competition will end on Saturday October 13th, when your team must pitch its game to a panel of expert judges. The judges will judge and there will be one winner. They will leave with a $5000.00, an honorarium for their genius, and a truly enviable notoriety.

The judges will judge your game on the following BIG games criteria:

  1. the game must be fun
  2. the game must be playable by pretty much anyone: young, old, straight, gay, transgendered, street-engaged, married, people living with disabilities, people living in yaletown, people who play World of Warcraft, etc.
  3. he gameplay requires real-world interaction between people (such as online interaction, personal ads, phone-tag, postcards, flashmobs, etc.)
  4. Players' social networks are expanded to include people who are "different" from themselves

How to enter the competition:

Email Brian Smith at bsmith@plan.ca with your intention to play. He will forward you some fine print.

United Nations Youth Education AmbassadorsUnited Nations Youth Education Ambassadors programme

application deadline July 1, 2007

This program is open to all Grade 9, 10, & 11 students in the Greater Vancouver area.

Do you know what Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Roger Federer and Ronaldo have in common? They are all Goodwill Ambassadors for the United Nations! They help educate the general public about important world issues such as poverty, education, HIV/AIDS and refugees; and the United Nations Association of Canada - Vancouver Branch (UNAC-Vancouver) wants YOU to follow in their footsteps!

Through the creation of the Youth Education Ambassador Program (Y.E.A Program) the UNAC-Vancouver is providing the youth of Vancouver the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and experience today while leaving a legacy for tomorrow's generation. We are looking for TEN inspired, passionate, reliable and independent students in Grade 9, 10, or 11 in the Greater Vancouver area that want to change the chaos of today's world. If you are interested in world issues, enjoy learning about different cultures and are looking to make a difference in your community then you could be one of our first Youth Education Ambassadors!

Here's how it works:

Step 1 - Choose a UN related topic that YOU are passionate about (i.e. HIV/AIDS, refugees, poverty, women's issues, peacekeeping.)

Step 2 - Decide on and design a program that your school/community would enjoy and benefit from. For example: seminars, newsletters, 30 hour famine, assemblies, model UN, radio program, school club, concerts.

"Banana Boys" : a play about growing up Asian-Canadian male

The West Coast Premiere of the Toronto hit
Banana Boys
Presented by The Firehall Arts Centre
By Leon Aureus Based on the novel by Terry Woo

Opens at the Firehall Arts Centre
Previews February 23 -27 | Shows - February 28 - March 17

"Banana: yellow on the outside, white on the inside. Otherwise known as Canadian-born Chinese (CBC)."

Banana Boys is a smart, contemporary and wickedly funny play that breaks down stereotypes and paints a picture of what it is to be an Asian-Canadian male. The story centres on the lives of five regular Asian-Canadian guys in their mid-twenties. We follow the boys through their years at the University of Waterloo as they struggle through issues of identity and self worth. Trapped by parental obligations and societal expectations, these CBC's are neither fully Chinese nor Canadian. Adapted by Leon Aureus from the critically acclaimed first novel by Terry Woo, this wickedly funny play is directed by Jack Paterson.

Everyone knows a Banana Boy. He's the beer-swilling I.T. guy bitter at his poor dating prospects with white and Asian women. He's the suave and ambitious young businessman who works hard and plays harder to get ahead. He's the quiet engineer with broken dreams of being a hockey star and quiet romantic in hopes for love. He's the nerdy sexually deprived son of a convenience store owner. Banana Boys are from all walks of life. But how did they get to where they are now? The boys live in a fully wired world of high-speed internet, video interface and MSN Messenger. With the joys of beer, hockey and video games, to the frustrations of being stereotyped in the mainstream media, Banana Boys captures what it means to be a "Yellow Guy" in the Great White North.

The five young men we follow run the gamut of the Asian-Canadian experience:
Rick: the ultra ambitious B.Com 'player'
Sheldon: the hopeless romantic engineer
Luke: the club crawling psych major
Dave: the cynical woman-hating comp sci. student
Mike: the pre-med hopeful who wants to be a writer.

The cast of Banana Boys includes, Simon Hayama, Victor Mariano Parnelli Parnes, Rick Tae and Vincent Tong. This production is made possible through the generous support of the Vancouver Foundation.

global youth assembly logoApply to present at the Global Youth Assembly in Edmonton this summer

August 1-4, 2007
Proposal deadline: March 15, 2007

REACH OUT, SPEAK UP! Ignite Change Now

Global Youth Assembly 2007, a satellite project of the Youth Assembly at the United Nations, will bring 700-1000 international youth and young professionals 16 - 28 years to Edmonton, Canada.

These dynamic individuals will participate in keynote addresses, break-out sessions, and workshops in order to build an understanding of critical local and global issues and to strengthen their capacity to stimulate change. The content of the Assembly will focus on the UNESCO 8 area domains of action for a Culture of Peace as a conceptual framework. This will help participants develop comprehensive knowledge of social, economic, and political issues in our world - from AIDS, to poverty, to human security - as well as offering action-oriented philosophies and quantitative strategies that will empower them to tackle these problems.

Youth will examine how issues impact people at various levels - the personal, the community, and globally. By exploring the complexity and interdependencies of local and global issues, delegates will have the opportunity to understand that building effective solutions requires an approach that recognizes both the specific characteristics of each problem, as well as broader holistic aspects.

This Assembly will allow youth, once they have realized their individual and collective power, to have the space and opportunity to reflect on innovative ways to take creative action. We hope that after attending the Assembly, youth participants will be able to apply the 8 action areas to their daily lives and activities - through their relationships, interactions, consumption, and life choices.

We are accepting a wide-range of oral and poster presentation proposals that offer either an educational opportunity on the 8 action areas of a culture of peace, or a leadership development workshop.

For more information, visit www.youthassembly.ca

419 East 24th Avenue (Between Main and Fraser)
Saturday November 18, 2006
10am - 5pm

Deadline for registering: Wednesday November 15, 2006, 3:00pm

This event has been created by youth and youth allies to bring together youth, service providers, funders, policy makers and adult allies, to elaborate on our understanding of what prevention efforts can look like as they relate to substance use.

This will be a fun, free event including music, food, informative workshops, film & claymation screenings produced by Vancouver youth, and an opportunity for youth to get plugged into prevention activities! Your participation and the participation of the youth you may work with will help make this event a success. The event will give youth and adults alike an opportunity to explore prevention approaches that they normally may not have access to. Better yet, participants will have the chance to engage in casual dialogue and build trust intergenerationally. Workshops may take the form of artistic expressions, interactive activities, sharing stories & experiences and much more!

This event is a first. By doing this on an annual basis, organizers hope to build stronger networks of individuals and organizations within the field and strengthen public support and awareness around prevention of problematic drug.

United Nations World Urban Forum: youth are invited too ... and it's free!

June 19-23, 2006

bike to cap>aids posterThe World Urban Forum is held every two years by the United Nations to examine one of the most pressing issues facing the world today: rapid urbanization in a world where half of humanity lives in cities and where in the next 50 years that proportion is expected to reach two-thirds of the global population.

The Third Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF3) will be hosted by the Government of Canada in partnership with UN-HABITAT in Vancouver, Canada. For five days, thousands of participants from more than 150 nations will discuss, debate and share experiences about how to make our cities better places to live.

The Third Session of the World Urban Forum will mark the 30th anniversary of the first United Nations conference on human settlements held in Vancouver in 1976, which led to the creation of UN-HABITAT.

Click here to register yourself to attend the World Urban Forum (June 19-23, 2006). It's free to attend!

Youth are at the table at WUF3

Volunteers needed for Car-Free Commercial Drive Festival

COME PLAY in the STREET - VAN EAST STYLE!

The Car-Free Commercial Drive Festival Sunday June 18, 2006
www.commercialdrivefestival.org

Hello and happy springtime to all residents, landed immigrants, and soul-citizens of the Peoples' Republic of East Vancouver!

If you experienced last year's first-ever Car-Free Commercial Drive Festival, then your memories of the day tell the story. The Fest was a glorious free-for-all street party, with music and dance, art and magic, demented bicycles, street hockey, a freestore, a healing zone, vendors and info-tables and so much more.all thrown down for free, by the people of The Drive, for the people of The Drive and our guests. The Festival gave us a day to celebrate the unique multi-dimensional spirit of our community, and to experience our space reclaimed from cars and given back to people. The Commercial Drive Festival was successful way beyond our imaginings.

Around 25,000 people participated, including over 250 volunteers. The Festival is completely volunteer organized and presented (including performances). Many of the organizers and day-of volunteers reported that the experience of participating in the festival opened new doors for them in connecting with their community, meeting cool funky folks, and playing a part in the creation of a magnificent event.

So, we are doing it again! This year's Fest will happen on Sunday June 18 -- Fathers' Day. The street will be closed again to all motorized traffic, from First Ave to Venables and from Woodland to Salsbury. Buses will be re-routed along Victoria Drive. Programming will happen between noon and 6, but the hours of street closure will be from 10 am to 8 pm.

One new feature of this year's Fest is that we have secured Victoria Park(bordered by Kitchener, Salsbury, Grant and Victoria) for the day. Since the Festival coincides with the first World Cup Soccer match between Brazil and Australia, Victoria Park --known as "bocce ball park" -- will be designated the Commercial Drive World Cup zone, with soccer-related activities and entertainment programmed by some of the Drive's prominent founding cultures, including the Italian and Portuguese communities. Victoria Park will surely be hopping.

Of course, we can't do this Festival without you. This is your invitation to help co-create the dream. We are still seeking a few people to fill key organizer roles, so if you are well-organized and enjoy directing the flow, please step up. Beyond that, we need lots of people to do just a little bit each in the days leading up to the Festival, including:

  • graphics (still looking for poster art!)
  • website design
  • banner-painting
  • flyering and postering
  • outreach to organizations, communities or events
  • media contacts
  • liaison with Drive merchants and residents
  • gathering donations for volunteer support and afterparty
  • And we especially need helpers for Festival Day, for sundry chores including:

... blockade marshalls,* setup, teardown and cleanup, drivers with vans or trucks, site maintainance, vibekeepers (low-key "security"), donation fairies, sign-makers, info-table staffers, video/still documentation, creating participatory art (perhaps on the theme of Fathers Day?), general support and gophering.

    * we need a LOT of people to help keep those cars at bay! We will supply sidewalk chalk.

We request a two-hour minumumum time commitment on Fest Day if possible.

So please, drop us a line asap and tell us what you'd like to do, or if you just want to help out doing whatever is needed. Tell us if you have time restrictions or physical limitations. And also tell us if you have special talents, interests, or resources you'd like to share. The rewards of joining the Car-Free Commercial Drive Festival Crew are many, including delight, satisfaction, connection, and bigtime karma. Plus you'll get first crack at t-shirts, and you will be in the loop on the volunteer afterparty, which is sure to bump the 'hood.

Tell your friends about the Fest. Post it to your networks. Join in creating the Car-Free Commercial Drive Festival, and start reclaiming your street, your neighbourhood, and your planet...for fun.

Thanks evermuch, see you on The Drive!

    Bike to CAP>AIDS (June 10, 2006)

bike to cap>aids posterOn Saturday, June 10 th , 2006, at 10AM, the BC Chapter of Canada Africa Partnership on AIDS is kicking off its first Bike to CAP AIDS - a twenty km peddle that starts at Science World and follows a spectacular, yet comfortably flat, urban course along the Seawall and around Stanley Park before heading back for that silvery, glittering dome of knowledge on False Creek's eastern shore.  Which may still be wrapped in some sort of a peculiar white plastic garb. But I digress.

The point is , it's a fun, volunteer-run effort to raise support and awareness for grassroots organizing efforts that aim to resist, survive and overcome the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa.  Specifically, the focus is on Bikes - which as it turns out, can be pretty useful!  Funds raised will enable the fabrication and purchase of African-built bikes, which will then be supplied to HIV/AIDS primary health care workers and educators as a means to further their outreach efforts.   Basically, every couple hundred bucks raised equals a bike. (On a side note, at the event there will actually be a couple young guys from CAYO, a youth-led HIV/AIDS organization in Malawi that received funding and bikes last year and who will be sharing a bit of their story and struggle in Vancouver during June - no, they didn't ride all the way here, but they're going to be doing a month's worth of work and learning in partnership with YouthCO AIDS and CAP AIDS - but that's another good story)

We want you to participate and help make this event a success! Organizers are inviting you to get involved by registering as an individual, or by forming a team, and helping raise funds and awareness for a good cause.  Plus, you'll get to meet some good folks, get some exercise (which is important, y'know) and feel good about yourself.  Not that you don't already.

To sign-up , all you do is go to www.capaids.org and click on the Bike to CAP AIDS logo, and plug in a few bits of information - then you're good to go!  (if you don't have registration fee right now, don't worry - you can still sign-up, and were not going to exclude anyone for not being able to pay. It also gives you an opportunity to ask your network of friends and patrons to sponsor you).

If you are unable to register, and you are not one of the folks were generous enough to contribute, you are welcome to sponsor me or any other participants..

    Our Community Story
Artists and youth capture living history of Hastings-Sunrise

    Our Community Story

In mid-October, a three-block stretch of East Hastings Street will come alive with stories of the neighbourhood’s past. Our Community Story is the work of fourteen youth interns and six mentoring artists who have spent the past several months exploring the living history of the Hastings-Sunrise Neighbourhood. They are developing film, photos, animation and soundscapes based on stories gathered from seniors and long-time residents. The project will culminate in a multi-venue neighbourhood exhibition, opening October 14 and 15, 2005. The artwork will be on display in the neighbourhood until late November.

Hastings-Sunrise, one of Vancouver’s first residential neighbourhoods, was originally slated for development as the city’s downtown core, and was home to the young city’s first hotel and post office. Older residents of the community remember a very different neighbourhood, where they could fish for their dinner on the waterfront, ride a streetcar, or catch a matinée at the Olympia Theatre on the corner of Hastings and Nanaimo. “The most exciting part about this process is seeing people’s faces light up as they recall memories they had not thought of for 50 years or more,” says coordinator Jaimie Robson.

The project’s three main components are Four on Hastings, a film and audio documentary examining four unique businesses on East Hastings Street; Stories of the Waterfront, a time-based collage/stop-motion animation based on stories from longshoremen, seaman and residents with a close relationship to the water; and Sights and Sounds of Hastings Park, an collection of sound stations to be installed in four neighbourhood cafés, detailing the varied history of Hastings Park, which was an internment site for Japanese-Canadians during World War II and is now home to the PNE. All events are free to the public.

Our Community Story has been developed by artists Maya Ersan and Jaimie Robson in partnership with Kiwassa Neighbourhood House, Hastings Community Centre, and Hastings North Business Improvement Association. Mentoring artists Maya Ersan, Jaimie Robson, Lea Moss, Pietro Sammarco, Igor Santizo, and Paul Bennett have been working with a diverse group of neighbourhood youth collecting stories from residents who remember the different faces of the neighbourhood. Youth interns are Olivia Kempkes, Max Knowlan, Darnel Cobly, Dennis Pierre, Frank Pacheco, Karl Fousek, Mimi Li, Bruce MacDonald, Mitchell Vong, Julie Jones, Lucy MacKenzie, Wendy Chen, Emma Banks, and Camilo Porter.

For more detailed information on the project, including a complete list of venues, call Jaimie Robson at 604.254.4649, or Maya Ersan at 604.733.3722 or visit www.mediaundefined.ca.
